Going Green

Our white roofs are green.

You and I live in a truly unique and beautiful area in northern Michigan. Our friends, relatives, and many tourist set aside vacation time and money just to come visit this area. Unless we collectively use responsible oversight, environmental damages will have an impact. If not in our day, what will we be leaving as an inheritance for future generations?

It's unlikely that the roof choices you or I make will "save the world". However, the effective impact on the environment, be it good or bad, is usually incremental changes, which, when put together make a difference.

Truth is you cannot consume without causing a change, so the goal becomes "how can I lessen any negative change"? With roofing, the three big impacts are (1) manufacturing (2) installation and (3) the eventual disposal of old roofing. One large way to lessen impact is to stretch the years between installation and the need to replace. That is why we use Sarnafil. Sarnafil has outlasted any other single ply manufacture in doing this. And, Sarnafil is a manufacturer that uses recycled materials to build its products.

Most PVC roofs we install are mechanically attached with the roof seams heat welded, rather than fully adhered with the roof and seams glued less chemicals (VOC's) are released into the air when this product "flashes" or are dumped into the ground when the cans are spent. Finally, when a PVC roof eventually reaches its final demise it is recyclable!! (see: In The Press "PVC Recycling a Reality") The majority of the roofs we install are white in color. This is also good for the environment in many ways. Sarnafil was one of the first roof membranes to earn the EPA Energy Star Rating, reduce "Urban Heat Island" effect (because of reflecting rather than absorbing heat) and work with LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Projects, saving you energy dollars while helping the planet. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "cool"!!

The future of roofing is today, and Bloxsom Roofing has and continues to look for ways to bring you better roofing, while being a responsible neighbor.
